Ivan A. Blanco (R-Saipan) has authored a measure that aims to impose fines and other penalties on companies that bring in foreign workers illegally.<\/p>\n<p>House Bill 20-57 was introduced during Monday\u2019s session at the House chamber on Capital Hill.<\/p>\n<p>HB 20-57, if it becomes a law, would authorize the CNMI Department of Labor to enforce criminal penalties and provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act particularly Section 274 in bringing in and harboring certain aliens.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed law stems from recent reports that certain contractors working on the casino hotel project in Garapan have hired workers who entered the CNMI as tourists.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Ralph DLG Torres has sought the help of the Department of Homeland Security to authorize local enforcement agencies to implement federal immigration laws following the controversy involving MCC International. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
