{"id":250462,"date":"2017-04-18T06:06:36","date_gmt":"2017-04-17T20:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=250462"},"modified":"2017-04-18T06:06:36","modified_gmt":"2017-04-17T20:06:36","slug":"pacific-community-congratulates-utoikamanu-high-level-un-appointment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/pacific-community-congratulates-utoikamanu-high-level-un-appointment\/","title":{"rendered":"Pacific Community congratulates \u2018Utoikamanu on high level UN appointment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NOUMEA, New Caledonia\u2014The Pacific Community (SPC) offers its congratulations on the appointment of the Kingdom of Tonga\u2019s Fekita \u2018Utoikamanu to the esteemed position of United Nations High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States by the United Nation\u2019s Secretary-General, Mr Antonio Guterres.<\/p>\n<p>SPC Director-General Dr. Colin Tukuitonga congratulated \u2018Utoikamanu, a former SPC Deputy Director-General, with assurances of SPC\u2019s support in carrying her duties forward and the important work of the global multilateral body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSPC joins the global community in unified voice and common agenda for sustainable development. From the Pacific, climate change and sustainable environmental management is especially pressing, and it brings us great pleasure that Ms. \u2018Utoikamanu has been appointed to champion these and other efforts of global concern,\u201d Tukuitonga said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Utoikamanu is an accomplished and well respected diplomat, and we are confident that she will lead her office and their important programmes of work with great vision, integrity and resolve,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Utoikamanu was SPC\u2019s Deputy Director-General from 2009 to 2015. Prior to that, she served as Tonga\u2019s Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations, United States of America, Cuba and Venezuela and High Commissioner to Canada.<\/p>\n<p>SPC is a Permanent Observer to the UN since 2014, following the adoption of a resolution by the UN General Assembly.
