(Walter Sutherland)

It was just another jog through the park for veteran runner Robin Sapong as he coasted to victory in the Commonwealth Football League’s fun run held Saturday morning along Beach Road.

Sapong finished the around 4-mile course that started and ended in the parking lot of the former Oleai Beach Bar & Grill with runners heading to as far as Japanese tank across Quartermaster Road in 15:35

Sapong beat 14 other runners, including Jude Loste, who crossed the line just 15 seconds behind the former. Sapong’s daughter, Reylynn, was third overall with a time of 17:35 and took the first place in the women’s division. The younger Sapong did not even stop for water at the turn as she kept trucking down the path ahead of the eight other boys in the pack.

Participants received various IT&E swag and one lucky winner went home with a new cell phone after the race, which was held to raise funds for a CFL team that will compete against the Philippines and Guam.

“All in all, the event was a success. This was only the first of a number of fundraiser efforts that we have planned and we really just want to get the buzz out about our cause,” said CFL’s John Blanco.

“We want to express a big thank you to Brad Ruszala and IT&E for supporting the team and we are looking forward to get things rolling on the field,” added Blanco.

According to Blanco, about 20 players have been participating in practices and he expects veterans to start coming out soon.

Blanco added they expect to meet tough challenges from the Philippines and Guam as their opponents have multiple games under their belts coming into their matchups with the CNMI.

The Commonwealth’s three-game series kicks off on Oct. 20 at home with the local bets facing the PH’s Punishers at the Airport field. The CNMI players will then travel to the Philippines for a rematch with the Punishers on Nov. 10 before returning home to duel Guam on Dec. 1.

Meanwhile, Blanco said they are still accepting quarterbacks and other positions. Practices take place at the Airport field every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday starting at 5pm.

For more information, email johnsblanco@gmail.com.

[5
174,51,63,133
post-25322","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sports","tag-commonwealth-football-league","tag-guam","tag-philippines","tag-run
["GET
