(MTEC)

Graduating senior Reynafe Aniga of Saipan Southern High School is the recipient of this year’s Marianas Tourism Education Council scholarship.

Aniga was chosen based on her involvement with her school’s MY WAVE Club, community service, general point average, essay, and her MY WAVE Club adviser’s recommendation. She was presented her $1,000 scholarship by MTEC on May 24, 2017, during the school’s awards ceremony.

“I am humbled and glad that I am a recipient of this scholarship!” said Aniga, who plans to study hospitality management at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. “I was able to discover my interest in the hospitality field because of the many opportunities the club provided. By attending [MTEC’s] tourism summit, I learned that it offers such a wide array of career choices, ranging from travel and leisure, to hotel and lodging to restaurant service. Personally, I think that in this field you will never be bored.”

After attaining her degree, Aniga plans to pursue her interests in travel and international business.

“There’s always room to improve, to level-up in management, and opportunities to travel. I dislike the idea of routine,” she said. “The MY WAVE Club allowed me to develop important skills such as organization, time management, and teamwork. Because the club is active in various events such as beach cleanups, tourist greets, and annual summits, it is required of me to ensure I dedicate just enough time for both the club and my classes. I believe that the hospitality industry will teach me something new every day and strengthen my skills in many different ways.”

What words of encouragement does she offer other students? “Don’t be afraid to join in something new. Whether it’s the MY WAVE Club or another club you find interest in, try it out! Even if it’s something you think you’d never do, do it anyway. You might discover a whole new part of you that you never knew existed. Extracurricular will really help you discover who you are in high school. In the classroom, you learn about the world. In extracurricular, you learn about yourself.”

Aniga was also named Manta Ray of the Year at the awards ceremony.
