The CNMI and other Pacific Island nations remain committed to the issue of climate change despite the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris climate change agreement, more popularly known as the Paris accord.<\/p>\n
The accord requires countries to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions. On Thursday last week, President Donald Trump withdrew the country from the accord. <\/p>\n
Torres said the U.S. decision means differently for state and territorial governments.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt does not mean that state and territorial governments cannot continue to pursue avenues to address issues related to climate change,\u201d said Torres.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that the CNMI hosting the Pacific Islands Environment Conference is a testament the Commonwealth\u2019s dedication and seriousness in addressing global warming and the rising sea levels. The PIEC will be held from June 13 to 15 at the Saipan World Resort\u2019s Royal Taga Hall.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe upcoming PIEC conference is but one notable example of the effort the Pacific islands are doing to enhance regional collaboration on this issue,\u201d said Torres.<\/p>\n
He added that his administration is proud of the work done by the Bureau of Environmental Coastal Quality and the climate change staff in addressing the issue. <\/p>\n
