(Bea Cabrera)

The Saipan Chamber of Commerce gave away $12,000 worth of scholarship grants during its general membership meeting yesterday at the Royal Taga Room of the Saipan World Resort.

The six awardees were four high school students and a college and a vocational student.

“The SCC Education Committee reviewed all 36 applications and based their decision on the awardees’ academic merit and contributions to the community,” said Chamber president Velma Palacios.

The high school awardees are Mt. Carmel High School’s Jacqueline Doctor, Saipan International School’s Kaiyeesha Tambakau, and Marianas High School’s Johoret Diaz and Robert Jomar Malate.

Doctor will go to Oxford College of Emory University to take up liberal arts for two years before moving to Oxford University to take up Biology.

Tambakau is set to enroll at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and will take up performing arts and film.

Diaz will go to school at South Seattle College to take up a degree in dental hygiene, while Malate will go to Harvard University to take up mechanical engineering.

The college awardee is Carl Joshua Pagcaliwagan, a student at Northern Marianas College taking up liberal arts, while the vocational awardee is Earl John Bordon, who graduated last year from MHS. He is set to go to Le Cordon Bleu in London to take up Baking & Pastry with Culinary Management. He plans to put up a bakery on Saipan someday.

“My favorite part of the scholarship application was the essay because, compared to your résumé which is kind of static and fixed, your essay shows who you really are and what you want to express. My essay was about how my passion for engineering started and my dreams for engineering here in the CNMI,” said Malate.

Every year, the Chamber gives out scholarship to deserving students. The awardees are given $2,000 each to fund a portion of their education.

“We are happy with the turnout of the scholarship application this year and the awarding of the six deserving students. This is all possible because of the support of our members, fundraising events, and generous contributions.” Palacios added.

The Saipan Chamber of Commerce gave away $12,000 worth of scholarship grants during its general…

[900
15968,17144,15969,17049
post-254039","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured","tag-harvard-university","tag-jacqueline-doctor","tag-robert-jomar-malate","tag-royal-taga-room
["GET
