Sablan (Ind-MP) announced yesterday that the Marianas is receiving $1.3 million for wildlife and habitat restoration and another $1.2 million for sportfish restoration projects. Congress authorized the annual funding. American Samoa, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands all receive the same amount as the Marianas.

We hold our islands in trust for those who come after us,” Sablan said. “We have a moral responsibility to make sure that what we leave behind is better than what was given to us. The funding that Congress is making available today will help us live up to that responsibility.

“But caring for, restoring, improving the lands and waters of our islands is not only for the future,” Sablan added. “We all benefit today from having a healthy environment.”

The funds, which are distributed to the 50 states and to Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands, and the Marianas, come from excise taxes paid everywhere in the U.S. on firearms and ammunition, bows, sport fishing gear, boat engines, and fuel.

The Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration and Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration Acts set up the grant programs to promote projects to restore, conserve, manage, and enhance wild birds and mammals and their habitat.
