House Speaker Ralph Demapan (R-Saipan) said yesterday that all threats, whether from North Korea or not, must be taken seriously and that \u201cany threat is a cause for concern,\u201d moments after sending a letter to summon members of the local Homeland Security Office. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe just have to take extra precaution and be ready,\u201d said the House speaker, referring to his letter addressed to Office of Homelands Security and Emergency management special assistant Gerald Deleon Guerrero.<\/p>\n
Demapan sent a letter yesterday to Deleon Guerrero, summoning his office to appear before the House of Representatives to \u201cprovide the members with the CNMI\u2019s preparedness, response, and mitigation plans.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn order to better prepare and respond to the needs of our Commonwealth\u2019s security, it is imperative that the Legislature is kept in the loop with the latest information at all times and with the guidance of [Deleon Guerrero\u2019s] office, [is] also prepared to respond accordingly with clear roles and responsibilities delineated and understood in advance,\u201d wrote Demapan.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny threat should not be ignored and be taken seriously,\u201d said Demapan.<\/p>\n
The North Korean threat came about after the U.S. government, led by President Donald J. Trump, said North Korea will be met with \u201cfire and fury\u201d should North Korea continue to issue threats to the U.S.<\/p>\n
North Korea, obviously not happy with the response, began claiming that they were weighing to preemptively strike neighboring island Guam with four intercontinental ballistic missiles referred to as the Hwasong-14. <\/p>\n
Despite the ongoing threats, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres said, through a statement from the administration, that he has full faith in the leadership of Trump, while Guam Gov. Eddie B. Calvo shared the same sentiments about the 45th president.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
