A 40-year-old man who sexually abused a girl since she was just 13 years old was sentenced to 30 years in prison yesterday.<\/p>\n
The sexual assault resulted in the then-minor girl to give birth to a premature baby last year. The girl is now 18 years old.<\/p>\n
Ruben Atalig Corpuz Jr. pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree.<\/p>\n
Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio sentenced him to 45 years in prison, all suspended except for 30 years.<\/p>\n
Corpuz will serve the sentence without the possibility of parole, with credit for 294 days of time served.<\/p>\n
After serving his sentence, Corpuz will be placed on supervised probation for 15 years.<\/p>\n
He was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine, register as a sex offender, and complete counseling by the Adult Probation Office, including sex offender treatment.<\/p>\n
During his probation, Corpuz will be prohibited from consuming any alcoholic beverages and from using illegal drugs.<\/p>\n
Assistant attorney general Betsy Weintraub prosecuted the case. Assistant public defender Jamal Saleh served as counsel for Corpuz.<\/p>\n
Corpuz sexually abused the girl on two separate occasions\u2014in September and October 2016\u2014on Saipan.<\/p>\n
Corpuz, a resident of Kagman, was arrested in November 2016 and he immediately confessed.<\/p>\n
Police said the victim\u2019s mother only discovered the sexual abuse after the girl was taken to the hospital for a stomachache in November 2016. While in the hospital, she was found to be eight months pregnant and was about to give birth. She later gave birth. <\/p>\n
