Sablan (Ind-MP) announced yesterday $881,148 in federal funding for rehabilitation of the runway at Tinian International Airport. The funds are being provided to the Commonwealth Ports Authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout federal funding to maintain our airports, seaports, and roads, Marianas taxpayers would have to pay for the upkeep of these critical facilities,\u201d Sablan said. \u201cThat is why I will continue to be a strong supporter of federal investment in infrastructure in the insular areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, as part of a fiscal 2018 omnibus appropriation for domestic programs, the House debated funding for the Department of Transportation, which administers the airport money. Final action on the legislation is expected later this week.<\/p>\n<p>The funding announced yesterday will pay for the rehabilitation of 8,600 feet of the Tinian airport runway to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement and to minimize foreign object debris.<\/p>\n<p>The Tinian International Airport is federally designated as a nonhub primary airport.
