{"id":262647,"date":"2017-10-20T06:00:37","date_gmt":"2017-10-19T20:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=262647"},"modified":"2017-10-20T06:00:37","modified_gmt":"2017-10-19T20:00:37","slug":"mcs-students-show-growth-natl-reading-assessment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/mcs-students-show-growth-natl-reading-assessment\/","title":{"rendered":"MCS students show growth in nat\u2019l reading assessment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mount Carmel School students recently improved their performance on a national reading assessment designed to improve interdisciplinary literacy. <\/p>\n<p>Early in the school year\u2014from Aug. 1 through Sept. 30\u201465 percent of MCS students are already approaching, meeting, or exceeding literacy benchmarks for college and workforce readiness.<\/p>\n<p>The assessment was part of the school\u2019s participation in Achieve3000, a cloud-based suite of interactive readings, formative assessments, and other resources that promote differentiated instruction and interdisciplinary reading for all grade levels. <\/p>\n<p>In a recent report sent to the school, Achieve3000 CEO Saki Dodelson wrote that the program uses a \u201cpatented method of blended, differentiated instruction proven to dramatically accelerate reading gains for all learners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to showing gains on the assessment, the update from Achieve3000 commended the school for engaging almost 100 percent of students in the program. In its update, Achieve3000 noted, \u201cIn a recent study, students who completed 40 reading activities on Achieve3000 gained an average of 113 Lexile points, nearly double the expected growth norms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MCS principal Frances Taimanao was very happy with the update. \u201cWe\u2019ve been using this program for a few years now, and it\u2019s very important that our students and teachers make full use of Achieve3000\u2019s ability to improve reading skills. It\u2019s all part of a growth mindset. As long as our kids stick with it, they will continue to grow and improve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, current 6th grader Leyonne Tolentino was recognized by Achieve3000 for ranking as one of the nation\u2019s top readers two years in a row.
