(Contributed Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Saipan Southern High School has been named the CNMI winner of this year\u2019s Red Ribbon Gate\/Wall Decorating Contest.<\/p>\n<p>In an announcement yesterday, the Red Ribbon Committee said that SSHS beat out 11 other schools on Saipan, Tinian and Rota that participated in the contest.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s Red Ribbon Gate Decorating Contest winner was Garapan Elementary School, which was where Lt. Gov. Victor Hocog signed the proclamation on Oct. 4 that kicked off Red Ribbon Week in the CNMI.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_263610\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-263610\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Red-Ribbon-pix2-300x245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-263610\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-263610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Each tiny key has the signature of a student\u2019s pledge to be drug-free. (Contributed Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The CNMI-wide gate\/wall decorating contest was open to all schools. <\/p>\n<p>Committee members also conducted Red Ribbon presentations on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.<\/p>\n<p>The NMI\u2019s Red Ribbon Committee includes local and federal agencies, and private and nonprofit organizations that have partnered to increase awareness of the National Red Ribbon Campaign\u2019s significance and promote a drug-free CNMI. <\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s theme was \u201cYour FUTURE is Key, So Stay DRUG-FREE.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The campaign provides communities with a forum to bring together parents, schools and businesses to find new and innovative ways to keep kids drug free.<\/p>\n<p>The first Red Ribbon Celebration was organized in 1986 by a grassroots organization of parents concerned about the destruction caused by alcohol and drug abuse. <\/p>\n<p>The red ribbon was adopted as a symbol of the movement in honor of Enrique \u201cKiki\u201d Camarena, an agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration who was kidnapped and killed while investigating drug traffickers.
