{"id":264078,"date":"2017-11-08T06:06:18","date_gmt":"2017-11-07T20:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=264078"},"modified":"2017-11-08T06:06:18","modified_gmt":"2017-11-07T20:06:18","slug":"cec-urges-17-year-old-citizens-register-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/cec-urges-17-year-old-citizens-register-now\/","title":{"rendered":"CEC urges 17-year-old citizens to register now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Commonwealth Election Commission is urging all 17-year-old citizens who will turn 18 years old by the Nov. 6, 2018, general election to register now as voters.<\/p>\n<p>CEC administrative officer Kayla Igitol is encouraging those 17-year-olds who will be turning 18 by the Nov. 6 election to register now while there is still no lines.<\/p>\n<p>To register, CEC just needs either a valid U.S. passport or a copy of one\u2019s birth certificate.<\/p>\n<p>Igitol disclosed that, as of Nov. 1, 2017, there are now 12,972 registered voters on Saipan and the Northern Islands, 1,629 on Tinian, and 1,818 on Rota\u2014for a total of 16,419 registered voters in the CNMI.<\/p>\n<p>She said the number fluctuates due to changes such as voters canceling or they don\u2019t want to vote here, deaths, and those having felony convictions.<\/p>\n<p>There were a total of 17,928 registered voters in the CNMI in the 2016 general election.<\/p>\n<p>The deadline to make any registration changes such as a change of last name or change of precincts is on Sept. 7, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>As of yesterday, CEC still has four vacant commissioner\u2019s positions, all representing Saipan and the Northern Islands.<\/p>\n<p>Last Sept. 26, the CEC board elected Jesus I. Sablan and Donald Hofschneider as chair pro tem and vice chair pro tem, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The board made a selection because CEC has no chairperson following the expiration of the term of former chair Frances M.
