A woman who had gotten down on the road along Garapan Street Thursday night was killed after a vehicle ran over her, police said.<\/p>\n
The victim, reportedly a 34-year-old woman from Ponhpei, was pronounced dead at the Commonwealth Health Center by Dr. Martin Rohringer at 11:59pm.<\/p>\n
The driver of the car, a Filipino national, stopped his car and called the police.<\/p>\n
Acting police spokesman Lt. Jason Tarkong told Saipan Tribune yesterday that investigators found the woman to be at fault.<\/p>\n
Tarkong said that police responded to an auto pedestrian accident on Thursday at 9:11pm, along Garapan Street by Mom\u2019s Round Two Bar. Upon arrival, police found the victim lying on the ground with serious injuries after being run over by a car.<\/p>\n
Tarkong said the investigation showed that the victim, who was under the influence of alcohol, walked into the street and got down as if she were going to sleep.<\/p>\n
As her friend was trying to wake her up and pull her off the road, a black 2000 Honda CRV drove over her. The driver stopped his car and called the police. Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services ambulance brought the victim to CHC.<\/p>\n
Last June 24, a 19-year-old woman was killed in a car crash near the Northern Marianas College on As Terlaje Hill. Police determined she was driving fast. <\/p>\n
Last March 11, a 52-year-old man died when a car he was driving hit a dump truck that had stopped to turn left to a construction project on the shoulder of Monsignor Guerrero Road near the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.\u2019s Waterloo in Chalan Kiya. Rescuers found that the victim was not wearing a seatbelt. <\/p>\n
Last December, two persons died and three others were injured during a vehicular accident on Chalan Pale Arnold Road in As Mahetog. Police said that speed and alcohol were factors in that crash. <\/p>\n
The Department of Public Safety stated that there had been 1,730 vehicular crashes in the CNMI in 2016 and 62 of them were alcohol-related, resulting in a traffic fatality. The As Mahetog incident was not included in that. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
