It is a major Jewish holiday celebrating the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem around 167 B.C. This was after three years of fighting the Greek king Antiochus, who forced the Jews to reject their religion and to worship the Greek gods. Under Judas Maccabee they won. These haiku\/senryu are how Hanukkah is celebrated today. I have placed a comma between each line to save space. There are traditionally three lines in every haiku. Haiku deal with nature, senryu human nature. Would you like to know, something about Hanukkah, read these haiku:<\/em><br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\ntemple lamp lit, for one night stayed lit for eight, so we remember<br \/>\nfirst night one candle, light a new candle each night, a blessing each day<br \/>\nFestival of Lights, say \u2018nas Godol haya Shaum\u2019, eight successive days<br \/>\nJudas Maccabee said, a great miracle happened here, Chanukah time<br \/>\neight branch candle lit, temple rededication, 25 Kislev (date and month)<br \/>\nHanukkah is eight, candles in the menorah, *gelt, latkes, and song<br \/>\nspin the top now, sing \u201cSovivon sov sov\u201d, *dreidel spin spin spin<br \/>\nmenorah aglow, it\u2019s a Jewish holiday, Happy Hanukkah.<\/p>\n<p>*gelt is money, latkes are potato pancakes, and a dreidel is a four-sided toy marked with Hebrew letters and spun like a top in a game of chance, played especially by children at Hanukkah.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<strong>The Global Girth of Merry Mirth<\/strong><br \/>\nMirth hurled many times around the world<br \/>\nup the Yangtze river where Shanghai\u2019s Bund is<br \/>\npast the United Nations flags all unfurled<br \/>\nto Dublin where Wilde wrote De Profundis<br \/>\nfat men famous for their rotundity<br \/>\njovial, conniving and high fiving<br \/>\nall laughing with great profundity<br \/>\ndrinking \u2018Two Buck Chuck\u2019 jumping and jiving<br \/>\nshaking like Santa\u2019s bowl full of jelly<br \/>\nhappiness dominates their attitude<br \/>\nrolling over laughing from top to bottom<br \/>\ndancing with more jiggles in their belly<br \/>\nleeway given plenty of gratitude<br \/>\nthis time around mirth finally got em.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<strong>Hagatna, Guam Holiday Haiku<\/strong><br \/>\na cool breeze, butterflies\u00a0 follow, along the beach<br \/>\nthis is a drinker, I know, puffer fish<br \/>\nporch sweeping, even the geckos, get going<br \/>\nclouds dissipate, old man puzzled, now full moon<br \/>\nmassaging my back, a low hanging coconut, evening breeze<br \/>\nbelly bloated, he rolls up his t-shirt, fiesta heat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, Dec. 12, is Chanukah (several different spellings).
