Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) hopes that both leaders of the United States and North Korea would seek de-escalation at the Korean peninsula.<\/p>\n
In a statement dated Jan. 3, 2018, Sablan said that \u201cmore dialogue\u201d is needed between both U.S. President Donald J. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after the former taunted Kim in a tweet saying that, like Kim, he also has a nuclear button at his desk.<\/p>\n
\u201cWill someone from his depleted and food-starved regime please inform [Kim] that I too have a nuclear button, but it is a much bigger and more powerful one than his\u2014and my button works!\u201d Trump tweeted in his official Twitter account.<\/p>\n
In his New Year\u2019s address, Kim initially stated a wish for peace with South Korea but then went back to his threats and taunts against the U.S.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe improvement of inter-Korean relations is the starting point for peace and reunification, and it is a pressing demand of the whole nation,\u201d said Kim in his address as translated by the National Committee on North Korea.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will continue to build up our self-defense capability, the pivot of which is the nuclear forces, and the capability for pre-emptive strike, as long as the United States and its vassal forces keep on nuclear threat and blackmail and as long as they do not stop the war games they stage at our doorstep, disguising them as annual events,\u201d Kim added, referring to the military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea.<\/p>\n
Sablan believes that although the U.S. is \u201cmilitarily more powerful,\u201d \u201cnothing good will emerge if war erupts with North Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMore dialogue is what is needed. Not tweets from our President, or threats from Kim, especially since the entire world already knows of America\u2019s military dominance,\u201d said Sablan.<\/p>\n
News outlet CNN reported that Kim is looking to send a delegation to the upcoming Winter Olympics that is going to be held at Pyeongchang, South Korea in February 2018. <\/p>\n
