{"id":268271,"date":"2018-01-18T06:12:35","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T20:12:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=268271"},"modified":"2018-01-18T06:12:35","modified_gmt":"2018-01-17T20:12:35","slug":"marianas-woman-first-reach-rank-colonel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/marianas-woman-first-reach-rank-colonel\/","title":{"rendered":"Marianas woman first to reach rank of colonel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, D.C.\u2014Esther Camacho Sablan of the Air National Guard had her silver eagle insignia, denoting the rank of colonel, pinned on her uniform at the Marianas congressional office by Delegate Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan (Ind-MP). <\/p>\n<p>Col. Sablan is believed to be the first woman from the Northern Marianas to achieve the rank of colonel in any of the U.S. Armed Services. Promotion to the rank of colonel requires congressional approval, which was granted last Dec. 2. Also attending the family ceremony were Col. Sablan\u2019s husband, Pat Fearn, and her mother, Rita \u201cChai\u201d Sablan Dutton.<\/p>\n<p>Delegate Sablan released a video of the event on YouTube today (https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UK9kSTYo_-Q&amp;t=4s).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColonel Sablan is an inspiration to us all,\u201d the delegate said, \u201cespecially to girls and younger women setting their goals in life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at her resume: Commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at Massachusetts Institute of Technology; earning both a bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees at MIT, simultaneously, in aeronautics and astronautics; then, multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as a combat search and rescue helicopter pilot and, along the way, collected two more master\u2019s degrees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Col. Sablan is currently assigned to Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, serving as chief of the Force Planning and Strategic Basing Division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who sees Air Force Colonel Esther Sablan,\u201d delegate Sablan said, \u201cknows there are no limits for people from the Marianas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope this is not the last time I pin the full bird on the shoulders of someone from our islands.
