NOUMEA, New Caledonia\u2014The Secretariat of the Pacific Community celebrated its 67th anniversary yesterday, Feb. 6, as an international organization dedicated to the Pacific region.<\/p>\n
Founded in 1947 under the Canberra Agreement, SPC is an organization that has grown and evolved over time and is now recognized worldwide as a specialist in its specific work areas, which include public health, geoscience, agriculture, forestry, water resources, disaster management, fisheries, statistics, transport, energy, human rights, gender, youth and culture.<\/p>\n
Now with more than 600 staff located at SPC headquarters in Noumea, New Caledonia; the regional office in Suva, Fiji; a country office in Honiara, Solomon Islands; and the North Pacific office in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia.<\/p>\n
SPC is embarking on a new term in its operations with a more cross-sectoral- and program-based approach to the Pacific\u2019s specific characteristics with a view to providing comprehensive and consistent responses to its member countries and territories\u2019 development issues built on the expert knowledge of its seven technical divisions.<\/p>\n
