WASHINGTON, D.C.\u2014Delegate Aumua Amata (R-A. Samoa) welcomed President Donald J. Trump\u2019s response to Tropical Storm Gita and his prompt declaration at Gov. Lolo Moliga\u2019s request allowing necessary disaster assistance resources to flow into American Samoa. <\/p>\n
\u201cAmerican Samoa was in the path of Tropical Storm Gita and sustained significant damaging winds and excessive rain, along with flooding and other destruction,\u201d said Amata. \u201cAlong with everyone on the islands, I was there during the storm, and saw the [damage] firsthand throughout the community that are affecting my neighbors and constituents. I greatly appreciate both Gov. Lolo\u2019s prompt request for federal action and President Trump\u2019s quick response on behalf of our people, followed by [the Federal Emergency Management Agency\u2019s] rapid arrival. This disaster declaration is necessary to allow much-needed federal funds, equipment and personnel to assist the recovery effort.\u201d<\/p>\n
As stated in the White House announcement, the President\u2019s declaration allows the Department of Homeland Security\u2019s Federal Emergency Management Agency to get involved immediately and coordinate efforts. They are authorized to help \u201calleviate the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population,\u201d along with mobilizing various efforts to \u201csave lives and to protect property, and public health and safety.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFor many, these [damage] are causing difficult times, and recovery will be costly and always takes time,\u201d said Amata. \u201cI\u2019m very pleased to know that federal help is already arriving, and those resources will help restore services.
