Eleven-year-old Donavan Guerrero\u2019s rubber duck, labeled duck 197, was the first of 2,500 other ducklings to cross the finish line in the Pacific Islands Club\u2019s Duck Race for Cancer at the San Antonio landmark\u2019s Lazy River last Saturday.<\/p>\n

Guerrero bagged $2,500 in cold hard cash, although he was not in attendance at the duck race itself.<\/p>\n

According to Duck Race director Glenn Policare, the event raised a total of $9,500 for the Commonwealth Cancer Association, after subtracting the costs of the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo sell 2,500 ducks in this economy is absolutely mind-blowing!\u201d he said. \u201cWe have huge support from the people of Saipan and it is great to have everyone out here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Policare shared that 10 other countries across the globe also held similar events.<\/p>\n

Tinian\u2019s Dr. James Toskas, his wife Joseline, and their two children attended the event for their first time. \u201cWe tried to buy ducks but they were sold out,\u201d he said. \u201cI think this is so fun and a great idea to raise money for charity. They should have more ducks!\u201d<\/p>\n

The 5th Annual Duck Race also featured a Human Duck Race that outfitted 24 participants with beaks, caps, goggles, fins, and life jackets. In order to be considered as a final finisher the contestants had to cross the finish line with their beak still on their noses after swimming one lap around the PIC Lazy River.<\/p>\n

Kento Akimaru, David Boyer, and Lennosuke Suzuki of Saipan Swim Club were the first to cross the finish line and earned bragging rights as well as a team building award from PIC.<\/p>\n

Saipan resident Sid Mostalas also brought his family to the event last Saturday and said it was \u201ca good opportunity to bring family together and help out the Cancer Association.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
