It\u2019s Red Cross Month and the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter is asking people throughout the Commonwealth to become a hero by getting trained, becoming a volunteer, or making a donation to #help1family on Giving Day, March 28. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe Red Cross is powered by our volunteer heroes who give of their time, talents and compassion to fulfill our vital humanitarian mission of preventing and alleviating human suffering,\u201d said Tayna Belyeu-Camacho, board chair. \u201cThey\u2019re familia, neighbors, or stranger from our community, who teach first aid and CPR classes, who respond to a fire in Garapan at 2am, who support those in need at what may be the worst time in their lives. We honor them during Red Cross Month and ask you to consider joining us and making a difference.\u201d <\/p>\n
This year the Red Cross salutes all the heroes who make a difference in their communities by: <\/p>\n
\t\u2022\tVolunteering to help people impacted by a disaster \u2028
\n\t\u2022\tTaking a first aid, CPR, or lifeguarding class to help in an emergency \u2028
\n\t\u2022\tProviding comfort to a member of the military, a veteran or their family \u2028
\nHome fires are the most common disasters that the Red Cross responds to each year. Here in the CNMI, it responded to nine home fires and helped nearly 40 individuals in the last year. <\/p>\n
In addition, it has taught over 400 students on the importance of disaster awareness and preparedness. <\/p>\n
Volunteers drop everything\u2014at any time of the day or night\u2014to help people who have lost everything. <\/p>\n
\u201cThese are the moments when I can witness strangers helping other strangers in their greatest moments of need,\u201d said Red Cross disaster program manager Juan Diego Tenoro. <\/p>\n
What we do<\/strong><\/p>\n The Red Cross has been helping people in need for more than 130 years. And much of our work is accomplished through the work of our volunteers. \n\t\u2022\tProvides nearly 391,000 support services to military members, veterans and their families. \u2028
\n\t\u2022\tHelps more than 181 million people outside the U.S. through disaster management and disease \u2028prevention efforts. \u2028<\/p>\n
