{"id":272109,"date":"2018-03-19T06:00:42","date_gmt":"2018-03-18T20:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=272109"},"modified":"2018-03-19T06:00:42","modified_gmt":"2018-03-18T20:00:42","slug":"people-project-now-equally-american","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/people-project-now-equally-american\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We the People Project\u2019 is now \u2018Equally American\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWe the People Project,\u201d a non-profit founded in 2013 to advance equality and civil rights in U.S. territories, recently changed its name to \u201cEqually American.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the last five years we have been working to end the second-class status of Americans living in U.S. territories, so we wanted to have that mission reflected more directly in our name,\u201d said Neil Weare, a Yale Law School-trained civil rights attorney who grew up in Guam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent national attention to U.S. territories following hurricanes Maria and Irma and North Korea\u2019s nuclear threats to Guam create an unprecedented opportunity to make the case that it is time to treat the 4 million citizens living in U.S. territories as \u2018equally American,\u2019\u201d Weare added.<\/p>\n<p>Equally American will carry over the non-profit\u2019s motto: \u201cEqual rights, wherever you live.\u201d This reflects the belief that where you live or what your zip code is shouldn\u2019t determine your rights as a U.S. citizen.<\/p>\n<p>The rebranding is part of a broader effort to expand the non-profit\u2019s advocacy for equality and civil rights in U.S. territories, both inside and outside the courtroom.
