{"id":272343,"date":"2018-03-21T06:06:08","date_gmt":"2018-03-20T20:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=272343"},"modified":"2018-03-21T06:06:08","modified_gmt":"2018-03-20T20:06:08","slug":"42-students-participate-mentor-meal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/42-students-participate-mentor-meal\/","title":{"rendered":"42 students participate in Mentor for a Meal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Marianas Young Professionals hosted its 10th and largest Mentor for a Meal event last Monday. <\/p>\n<p>According to organizer Gerard Van Gils, this year\u2019s event was the largest one yet that he organized, with the participation of about 42 students and 42 mentors. The event was held at the Naked Fish in Oleai. <\/p>\n<p>The concept is to pair a mentor with a high school student. The mentor and the student share a meal and the mentor is given the opportunity to share advice, life lessons, and stories. <\/p>\n<p>Van Gil said the students involved in Mentor for a Meal are either preparing to pursue higher education, or are preparing to enter the CNMI workforce. <\/p>\n<p>Van Gil said that public school students are equipped to transition smoothly into the professional community. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday was a real victory for public education\u2026public education is the great equalizer and our public schools are the centers of our community so what we\u2019re doing is we\u2019re bringing our public school students to interact with our professional community and everybody wins,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>The professionals involved in Monday night\u2019s Mentor for a Meal came from the government sector, private sector, businesses, and more.
