Many years ago, a woman\u2019s conviction for stealing a towel from a hotel\u2019s swimming pool area reached the CNMI Supreme Court. The case was popularly branded by a judge as \u201cthe great towel case.\u201d <\/p>\n
This July a Superior Court bench trial is set for two men accused of conspiring to steal \u201cbranches of bananas.\u201d<\/p>\n
The court has appointed Michael Dotts and Robert T. Torres as counsel for defendants Hilario Teigita Angui and Jonathan Babauta Ayuyu, respectively.<\/p>\n
At a status conference yesterday before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho in a room at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe, the defendants and their court-appointed counsel appeared. Assistant attorney general Jonathan Wilberscheid represented the government.<\/p>\n
Camacho set the bench trial for July 2 at 9am.<\/p>\n
It was assistant attorney general J. Robert Glass Jr. who filed the information charging the 34-year-old Angui and 21-year-old Ayuyu each with conspiracy to commit theft and theft.<\/p>\n
Glass stated in the information that on Dec. 14 and\/or Dec. 16, 2016 on Saipan, Angui and Ayuyu conspired to steal branches of bananas belonging to Miguel Aldan Fleming.<\/p>\n
