Superior Court Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja has imposed a 56-day prison term on a man who rented a car but never returned it. <\/p>\n
Naraja sentenced Gregorio Omar Lieto last Tuesday to two years imprisonment, all suspended except the first 56 days, for theft of vehicle.<\/p>\n
Naraja gave Lieto credit for time served of 26 days.<\/p>\n
Lieto, who is now working as a security guard, was allowed to serve the prison during weekends.<\/p>\n
After completing the prison term, the defendant will be placed on two years of probation. He was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, about $10,000 in restitution, and required to perform 100 hours of community work service.<\/p>\n
During the probationary period, Lieto will be prohibited from having direct or indirect contact with the victim, U Save Car Rental, and its owner.<\/p>\n
Lieto will also be prohibited from consuming or using any alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs during the probationary period.<\/p>\n
Lieto pleaded guilty.<\/p>\n
Assistant attorney general J. Robert Glass Jr., counsel for the government, initially recommended a sentence of two years, all suspended except 220 days.<\/p>\n
Assistant public defender Heather Zona, counsel for Lieto, recommended a sentence of time served.<\/p>\n
In November 2016, police arrested Lieto on the beach side of Lower Base for renting for a day a Toyota Corolla on Aug. 5, 2016 and never returning it.<\/p>\n
It was the owner of U Save Car Rental who called the police in November 2016 after finding the stolen car parked at the beach side of Lower Base.<\/p>\n
Traffic investigator Norris Kwon immediately responded to the area and found the car, operated by Lieto.<\/p>\n
The car was found to have a broken right side view mirror, missing rear bumper cover, and damaged left side tail lamp and front bumper cover.<\/p>\n
Kwon said Lieto confessed damaging the rear bumper cover during a family gathering when a family member hit the car with a four-wheeler.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
