{"id":275041,"date":"2018-04-30T06:06:09","date_gmt":"2018-04-29T20:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=275041"},"modified":"2018-04-30T06:06:09","modified_gmt":"2018-04-29T20:06:09","slug":"klewei-bags-best-of-show-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/klewei-bags-best-of-show-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Klewei bags Best of Show award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Woodcarver Nick Klewei won the Best of Show award during the 8th Annual Bridge Capital CNMI Art Competition that held its awards ceremony last Saturday at the Flame Tree Arts Festival at the Civic Center in Susupe.<\/p>\n<p>Klewei\u2019s winning piece was a wooden carving of a sea turtle carrying an octopus on its back called \u201cTurtle and Octopus.\u201d According to Klewei, the piece is his whimsical take on friendship. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe turtle and the octopus is a fairy tale story. The octopus was running away from dangerous fish and she accidentally landed on the back of the turtle and when she did that, she asked the turtle for help. After that, the turtle took her and fled and the fish didn\u2019t catch her but everywhere they went, the octopus managed to get the food\u2026to feed them and that was the beginning of their friendship,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Aside from sharing his tales through his talents, Klewei said the competition also helps him push himself and other artists to do better than he did the year before. Winning the competition assures him that he is in the right direction. <\/p>\n<p>Klewei was awarded $2,500 for his piece that took about a year to complete. <\/p>\n<p>Bridge Capital hosts the annual art competition in time with the annual Flame Tree Festival to support local artists. <\/p>\n<p>The company also awarded other prizes during Friday\u2019s announcement of competition winners, including the Governor\u2019s Choice Award, Community\u2019s Choice Award, Painting\/Open category, Photography, Woodwork and Mixed Media, Student category, and under 11. <\/p>\n<p>The Governor\u2019s Choice Award was given to the piece that was personally chosen by Gov. Ralph DLG Torres himself. Torres chose Gregorio Baenis\u2019 \u201cSakaw Roots\u201d piece for its representation of the indigenous culture and the importance of unity in a community. Bridge Capital awarded Baenis $1,000.  <\/p>\n<p>The Community\u2019s Choice Award was given to Jesus Sulla\u2019s piece \u201cFlame Tree at Night\u201d for using the Flame Tree Festival as his inspiration. Bridge Capital awarded Sulla $500. <\/p>\n<p>For the Painting\/Open category, Ireneo Q. David\u2019s \u201cTurtle (Under Sea)\u201d was awarded first place and Nhorleen Bhitco\u2019s sketch \u201cThe Marianas\u201d was awarded second place.  <\/p>\n<p>In the Photography category, Myla Capilitan\u2019s \u201cRefalu Bwesch\u201d piece was awarded first and Hervin Jacinto\u2019s \u201cView from Inos Park\u201d was awarded second. <\/p>\n<p>In the Woodwork and Mixed Media category, Debbie Winkfield\u2019s \u201cSilent Cry\u201d was awarded first place and Beatrix Susan Doyle\u2019s \u201cUnderwater Magic\u201d was awarded second place. <\/p>\n<p>For the Student category, Ruth Park\u2019s \u201cSea the Beauty\u201d was awarded first place and Tricia Salcedo\u2019s \u201cDancing Waves\u201d was awarded second place. <\/p>\n<p>The first place winner of each category was awarded $1,500 and the second place winners were awarded $1,000.  <\/p>\n<p>In the under 11 division, Sora Baidya\u2019s \u201cBlack and White Turtle\u201d was awarded first place and Kim Ju Eun\u2019s \u201cSweet Spring\u201d was awarded second place.
