Amata released the following statement:

“I had the honor of spending time with Governor Tenorio many times, and witnessing firsthand his devotion to public service. Gov. Tenorio’s service in public life coincided with my father’s service to American Samoa, and, as a result, we all became close personal friends and we enjoyed the company of Governor ‘Teno’ and first lady Sophie Tenorio at many conferences and activities in both Washington, D.C. and the Pacific. As first lady colleagues, Sophie and my mother, Nora, were especially close.

“Teno was a wonderful person. He conducted himself with dignity and purpose, but what truly endeared him to the people he served was his genuine humility. He had a rare way with people, because it came from the heart. He lived with integrity and led with vision.

“I am saddened by the news of his passing, but I know his legacy will continue in the Northern Marianas, and his life will be celebrated. The people of the Commonwealth put their trust in him as governor for 12 years, and made him the longest-serving governor in their history. He was a fellow alumnus of my alma mater, the University of Guam, and was well-known and widely respected throughout the Pacific, the other territories and all those who worked with him over the years.

“We pray that God will be close to his dear personal friends and family in this time. Fred and I offer our deepest condolences to former first lady Sophie Tenorio, the children and their entire family.” (PR)

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Delegate Aumua Amata of American Samoa honored the accomplished life of former CNMI governor…

[4
167,21,67,1589
post-276583","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news","tag-american-samoa","tag-life","tag-people","tag-washington
["GET
