But, to be honest, I never thought my dream could come true. I wasn’t always the best nor the brightest student in middle school. I’ve never received as much…awards than others,” added Taisacan.

She sometimes felt that she wasn’t good enough even after bringing home other awards. “I remember bringing whatever award I had home and showing them to my parents.”

“Even though they said I did a ‘good job,’ I still felt like a failure because there was always this thought replaying in my head, saying, ‘You’re not good enough, you’re not smart enough, you’re too dumb to do anything right.’ I tried my best not to believe that recurring thought, but sometimes I would be compared to others, so I eventually gave in to that thought.”

Taisacan overcame her insecurities with the help of her homeroom teacher and friends. “I started becoming strong…even though many still made assumptions and doubted me. I still had my dark days. Expectations of having the perfect job in the future, straight A’s, and the list goes on,” she said. “More than ever, it is important that we listen to ourselves. Trust that you know what makes you happy.
