{"id":277935,"date":"2018-06-12T06:06:48","date_gmt":"2018-06-11T20:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=277935"},"modified":"2018-06-12T06:06:48","modified_gmt":"2018-06-11T20:06:48","slug":"spc-staff-support-victims-of-pacific-disasters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/spc-staff-support-victims-of-pacific-disasters\/","title":{"rendered":"SPC staff support victims of Pacific disasters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NOUMEA, New Caledonia\u2014Last Friday, Colin Tukuitonga, director-general of the Pacific Community,\u00a0handed\u00a0705,840 Pacific francs, collected from all SPC staff in New Caledonia and Fiji,\u00a0over\u00a0to the French Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p>The funds will contribute to the reconstruction efforts of countries recently hit by natural disasters in the region (Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga). The funds were handed over to Michel Rigot, president of the French Red Cross in New Caledonia. They will be equally shared between the Red Cross societies of impacted countries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I commend SPC staff in Noum\u00e9a and Suva\u00a0who have raised funds, on top of their\u00a0day jobs, as a sign\u00a0of solidarity;\u00a0and the Red Cross for the work beyond reproach they are doing in the region,&#8221; Tukuitonga said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rest assured that these resources will be used until the last CFP franc for the best of impacted communities. The French Red Cross in New Caledonia is committed to work at the regional level and will dispatch resources on the ground,&#8221; Rigot said.<\/p>\n<p>SPC staff has contributed to this disaster fundraising through donations, food stalls, and a charity event. SPC Social Club called for donations after a cyclone hit Fiji and Tonga and after an earthquake occurred in Papua New Guinea.
