{"id":278014,"date":"2018-06-13T06:00:41","date_gmt":"2018-06-12T20:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=278014"},"modified":"2018-06-13T06:00:41","modified_gmt":"2018-06-12T20:00:41","slug":"rota-lawmakers-to-senate-consider-united-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/rota-lawmakers-to-senate-consider-united-proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"Rota lawmakers to Senate: Consider United proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Rota Legislative Delegation urges the Senate to review and possibly support the idea of subsidizing a private airline to service Rota, which is in dire need of air transportation after United Airlines dropped the Rota route.<\/p>\n<p>Delegation chair Sen. Steve Mesngon urged his fellow senators during a Senate session on Capital Hill last week for their \u201cfull support\u201d of United Airlines\u2019 proposal to serve Rota. <\/p>\n<p>The United proposal outlines possible scenarios, which would all require the CNMI government to subsidize the flights for up to $8 million annually, depending on how frequent the flights to Rota will be each week.<\/p>\n<p>Mesngon said that, with the stoppage of air services to Rota after United severed ties with code-share partner Cape Air, the airline servicing Rota, the medical patients of the island have been \u201cimpacted by this situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cape Air had its last flight to Rota on May 31, 2018. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have [already] seen an impact of what\u2019s going on,\u201d said Mesngon, reiterating his call for support of United\u2019s proposals. \u201cPlease support [the proposal] to bring back the service, or any kind of service, to the island of Rota.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Delegation member Sen. Teresita Santos (R-Rota) told Saipan Tribune that the Rota flight proposals were a response to the Senate President Arnold I.
