Around last month, a video taken from a surveillance camera went viral on social media. Two female tourists were walking at the side of Beach Road, until a car drives up behind them and hits one lady (De La Torre, Ferdie. \u201cTourist hurt in hit-and-run\u201d Saipan Tribune, 12 June 2018). Whether it was an accident or not, this action badly affects our island community.<\/p>\n
I am writing this to express my concern of the safety on our island and the importance of tourism. I know that is common sense to have sidewalks on both sides of the road, which should\u2019ve been done a long time ago. However, tourists should also know the boundaries. According to Daniel Durkin at the comments of the article \u201cTourist hurt in hit-and-run,\u201d he brings up his experience with tourists walking on the roads\u2014which happens often on our island.<\/p>\n
Perhaps a solution to this could be for companies involving tourists (such as the airport, hotels, or car rental companies) to give a brief explanation on safety. As for the locals living here, please have patience on tourists since the industry brings a lot for our islands.<\/p>\n
