The program highlights a variety of books that touch on the park\u2019s mission to honor the American and Marianas people who gave their lives during the Marianas Campaign of World War II.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In August, Saipan youth are invited to be part of two different Reading Ranger events:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes\u00a0by Eleanor Coerr<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Kindergarten 3rd\u00a0Grade: Aug. 4, from 9am to 11:30am<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 4th-6th\u00a0Grade:\u00a0\u00a0Aug. 4 and Aug. 11, from 2pm to 4:30pm (for 4th-6th\u00a0graders, this is a two-day program. Please plan to have your readers join us on both Aug. 4 and again on Aug. 11).<\/p>\n<p>Readers will explore the life of young Sadako.\u00a0\u00a0This book tells the story of a girl from Hiroshima who becomes sick with leukemia in the years after the atom bomb was dropped and her race to fold 1,000 paper cranes.\u00a0\u00a0After reading the book, participants will engage in fun learning activities and learn about the story\u2019s connections to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the park.\u00a0\u00a0Students will also help to fold 1,000 paper cranes that will be sent to the Children\u2019s Peace Memorial in Hiroshima Japan, in recognition of World Peace Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Unbreakable Code\u00a0by Sara Hoagland<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Kindergarten-4th\u00a0Grade: Aug. 14, from 9:30am to 11:30am and Aug. 18, from 9:30am to 11:30am<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday, Aug. 14, is Navajo Code Talker Day.\u00a0\u00a0To remember the incredible story of the Navajo people and their important role during World War II, American Memorial Park is inviting young readers to participate in this year\u2019s second Reading Ranger selection.\u00a0\u00a0During each session children will be guided through\u00a0The Unbreakable Code\u00a0by Sara Hoagland and have the opportunity to participate in fun and educational activities focused on the lessons of the story.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-registration is not required.\u00a0\u00a0To participate, simply come down to the American Memorial Park Visitor Center on the date and time of the session you would like to attend.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For more information on events at American Memorial Park, contact lead ranger Brooke Nevitt at 234-7207 x 2020 or via email at brooke_nevitt@nps.gov.\u00a0(NPS)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reading Rangers is a youth reading program at American Memorial Park.
