Lucy Selepeo, the performing arts coordinator in charge of handling the Street Market, said it was decided to cancel the weekly event as the weather refused to cooperate. <\/p>\n
\u201c\u2026We had an advisory this morning that there may be flooding. The strong winds might also blow away the tents,\u201d Selepeo told Saipan Tribune yesterday in a phone call late afternoon.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery time the weather [gets bad], we cancel the Street Market because of possible accidents due to the electric wires and the tents [being blown off]. When we get [an advisory] from the Emergency Management Office early in the morning\u2026we base the decision to call off the Street Market off of that,\u201d Selepeo said, noting that if the weather improves next Thursday, \u201cwe could expect the Street Market to be up and running.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, the cause of heavy rains and strong winds yesterday, Tropical Storm Soulik, is expected to head northeast toward Japanese waters.<\/p>\n
As of 1pm yesterday, Soulik\u2019s maximum sustained winds were at 40 mph while its movement toward Japan was clocked at a 20mph pace and expected to rise to a 105mph pace as it nears Japan.<\/p>\n
