{"id":282509,"date":"2018-08-17T06:06:08","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T20:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=282509"},"modified":"2018-08-17T06:06:08","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T20:06:08","slug":"sakman-blessing-ceremony-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/sakman-blessing-ceremony-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Sakman blessing ceremony today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government-owned canoe house is scheduled to be blessed today.<\/p>\n<p>According to Department of Cultural and Community Affairs project coordinator for the Seafaring Traditions Program John Castro, the canoe house in Susupe is done being built and will be blessed today at 10am, followed by lunch at noon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe canoe house revives our legacy, our culture, and our traditions; it commemorates how we started,\u201d Castro told Saipan Tribune. \u201c\u2026[The CNMI] started here when [our ancestors] came here through canoe. [The canoe house]\u2026signifies the continuation of this fading tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The canoe house would act as the storage area for traditionally crafted Chamorro canoes, called sakman. Castro noted that the canoe house should not be confused with the Guma Sakman, which is owed by a non-profit private entity.<\/p>\n<p>Castro noted that the sakmans being constructed under the seafaring program is all traditional\u2014every part of the boat would be made from resources obtained on the island, mirroring the ancient ways of sakman-making.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe try to be as close as possible to the traditional ways of making sakman, by technique and engineering, but of course with the tools of today,\u201d Castro told Saipan Tribune.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government-owned canoe house is scheduled to be blessed today.
