(UNIVERSITY OF GUAM)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As the University of Guam\u2019s Center for Island Sustainability approaches its 10th\u00a0anniversary, CIS announces its launching of the inaugural Island Sustainability Community advisory board.<\/p>\n<p>The board is comprised of local leaders and captains of industry and government. The ISCA board will set strategies to cultivate a sustainable future for the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach board member was selected for their contributions to the community,\u201d said Jackie Marati, chair of the ISCA board. \u201cWith their help, we hope that sustainable actions will be ingrained in our society in order to secure our future as islanders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CIS was established in 2009 and has since become a focal institute in the region for adapting and modeling sustainable technologies to meet island needs in the broader areas of the environment, economy, society, and education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUOG has led the way in island sustainability for the past nine years,\u201d said former UOG president Robert Underwood. \u201cWe look forward to the leadership of this board in bringing sustainable practices into our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Underwood continues working with CIS following his retirement as UOG president last month.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next year, CIS will prepare for its landmark 10th\u00a0anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Though the center is island-focused, it is also acting globally as the newest member of the Global Consortium for Sustainability Outcomes. Through this consortium, UOG will join collaborators for 12 international universities and research institutions in accelerating solutions to sustainability challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The first ISCA board meeting was held in July at UOG. Board members indicated that waste reduction, natural resource protection, and educational outreach will be the initial areas of focus for ISCA.
