Carmel School teachers form book club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teachers at Mount Carmel School recently formed a book club in an effort to grow and improve their skills as professionals.<\/p>\n<p>MCS president Galvin Deleon Guerrero said Friday that beginning with Chip and Dan Heath\u2019s book, Switch, teachers have been utilizing their weekly in-service sessions to discuss the book\u2019s insights with each other and to explore ways that the book\u2019s lessons can help them in and out of the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Switch uses current findings in psychological and sociological research to explain how individuals and organizations can successfully make positive changes. The book emphasizes that \u201cfor things to change, somebody somewhere has to start acting differently,\u201d and offers research-based and evidence-driven techniques for initiating and sustaining successful change efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Fifth grade teacher and 2007 AlumKnight Min Ji Han appreciates the lessons she learned from Switch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re learning is not limited to education and can be applied to many other professions,\u201d she said. \u201cI especially like the focus on finding bright spots of change that you can duplicate; instead of focusing on what\u2019s wrong, we should focus on what\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Deleon Guerrero, the best way to help students become life-long learners is to be lifelong learners ourselves and lead by example.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy reading one book together and meeting each week to share our thoughts on the book with each other, we are growing and thriving as a learning community,\u201d according to Deleon Guerrero.<\/p>\n<p>The MCS president disclosed that the move of the schoolteachers is in line with many schools across the nation that started their own book clubs to enhance teacher professional development.<\/p>\n<p>According to the ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development), \u201ceffective professional development in literacy must include a sustained, personal examination of our interaction with reading.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teachers at Mount Carmel School recently formed a book club in an effort to grow&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":34,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[746,37],"class_list":["post-28320","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news","tag-carmel-school","tag-education-2"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/28320","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/34"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=28320"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/28320\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=28320"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=28320"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=28320"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
