{"id":283249,"date":"2018-08-28T06:06:58","date_gmt":"2018-08-27T20:06:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=283249"},"modified":"2018-08-28T06:06:58","modified_gmt":"2018-08-27T20:06:58","slug":"1-6k-denied-entry-to-nmi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/1-6k-denied-entry-to-nmi\/","title":{"rendered":"1.6K denied entry to NMI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S Customs and Border Protection has refused entry to more than 1,600 persons that they suspect would come to the CNMI for unlawful purposes.<\/p>\n<p>According to CBP field operations director Brian J. Humphrey, they have upgraded their screening process in determining persons or individuals whom they think would be a risk to the CNMI.<\/p>\n<p>Humphrey, who attended Gov. Ralph DLG Torres\u2019 second State of the Commonwealth Address last Friday, told Saipan Tribune that issues on birth tourism and construction workers that entered the CNMI as tourists using the parole authority program were some of the reasons for CBP\u2019s tighter screening measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve enacted a number of measures to protect the community from those that wish to come here for unlawful purposes.\u00a0We\u2019re doing our part,\u201d said Humphrey. \u201cWe\u2019ve learned to become pretty good at determining suspicious factors that we need to look at when there\u2019s concern, if someone who\u2019ll come here would become a public charge.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He added that they are collaborating with other law enforcement agencies.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve implemented a number of measures and we\u2019re working closely with our partners such as the [Federal Bureau of Investigation].\u00a0We had a number of successes in intercepting individuals and sending them back home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, when I visited [Saipan] in February, from fiscal year [2017] to date, we had more than 1,600 persons that were expeditiously moved. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, we\u2019ve gotten a whole lot better at intercepting individuals coming here for unlawful purposes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Humphrey said the number of interceptions they made just show that their efforts are bearing fruit. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur numbers speak well of that worth. We\u2019re fighting as many as we can and sending them home so that they don\u2019t pose a threat and they don\u2019t add to the public costs.
