The NMI Humanities Council board continues to look for a next new executive director in the wake of Scott Russell\u2019s retirement this month.<\/p>\n
Council board chair Polly DLG Masga noted in an interview last week that they are continuing their search. She added that there were about seven applicants for the position, which has been announced twice already.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are definitely hard shoes to fill,\u201d said Masga, referring to Russell\u2019s departure from the council. \u201c\u2026We hope that whoever is selected for the [council] has the same passion for the humanities.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cWe want somebody who isn\u2019t just there for the job, but wants to be an intricate part of who we are as the Humanities Council,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n
The council threw a retirement party for Russell last Friday.<\/p>\n
Russell has been on Saipan for 44 years and has been associated with the council since its creation during the Trust Territory times.<\/p>\n
Russell noted in a previous interview that he expects the new leader to have a fresh perspective of contemporary issues such as the upward trend in economic development, social issues on the island, and even the Chinese presence in the region.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2026I am looking forward to them tackling those issues and providing great humanities programs to the people of the Commonwealth,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n
Russell said he plans to visit his brother in Ohio and his daughter in Oregon before ultimately returning to Saipan. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
