{"id":283942,"date":"2018-09-06T06:10:13","date_gmt":"2018-09-05T20:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=283942"},"modified":"2018-09-06T06:10:13","modified_gmt":"2018-09-05T20:10:13","slug":"kendo-master-in-nmi-honored-with-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/kendo-master-in-nmi-honored-with-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Kendo master in NMI honored with award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Japanese kendo master residing in the CNMI was presented with an annual award by the Japanese government yesterday for promoting kendo in the CNMI for over 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Izumi Seki, the Japanese Consul General for Guam, presented Itsuro Hosoda yesterday with the Foreign Minister\u2019s Commendation award for fiscal year 2018.<\/p>\n<p>[embedyt] https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=57kTcJZRh2E&amp;width=500&amp;height=350[\/embedyt]<\/p>\n<p>Hosoda was one of 205 recipients of this award, all honored for the promotion of Japanese friendship and culture around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very honored to receive this award,\u201d Hosoda said yesterday through a translator. \u201cI have received support from many [people on] Saipan\u2026and I am very honored to receive such an award,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hosoda teaches kendo to about 40 students of all ages at his Kendo Hall, called the Kenbu-Kan, located at Himawari. Hosoda is also the president of Himawari Saipan Inc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though I am old already, I would like to do my best to promote and continue what I have been doing in teaching kendo in the Kenbu-Kan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hosoda said he remains saddened to see high school students go off-island once they graduate, so he is focusing on elementary and middle school students and teaching them the \u201ccourtesy of respect\u201d as well as proper etiquette and ways to behave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sincerely hope that many people will join the Himawari Kenbu-Kan to learn the tradition and spirit of Japan through kendo, leading to strengthening the friendship between Japan and the CNMI,\u201d said Seki in her speech prior to presenting Hosoda with his award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Kendo is a martial art that preserves the tradition of Japan, the spirit of the Japanese, and a sport to learn human cultivation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>This was echoed by Kinji Shinoda, the Japanese consul to the CNMI. \u201cKendo is very important to the Japanese people,\u201d he said. \u201cKendo is not only a sport, but is also a kind of discipline as a human being,\u201d noting the importance of discipline in the Japanese culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough kendo, they can really understand what the Japanese people are. This is very important,\u201d he said, adding that that he \u201chighly appreciates\u201d Hosoda\u2019s efforts.
