Ralph DLG Torres wrote President Donald J. Trump to thank him for acting on his request for an emergency declaration in anticipation of Typhoon Mangkhut and for the ongoing federal response led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI write to offer my sincere gratitude and appreciation for your response in the aftermath of Typhoon Mangkhut. Your swift response in authorizing the Department of Homeland Security and [FEMA] to provide emergency protective measures have given the CNMI tremendous support to recover and protect the lives of our people,\u201d Torres said in his letter to Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlready, the partnership you have provided to the CNMI with FEMA and the U.S. Department\u00a0of Defense has seen a rapid recovery of the power, water, and transportation systems in the most\u00a0affected island of Rota. As we continue to assess the damage on all three of our most populated\u00a0islands, we are strengthened by the federal team you have provided and the support for our people you have showcased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump, I thank you on behalf of the people of the CNMI for your attention and\u00a0compassion during this natural disaster. You have my deepest gratitude for remembering and\u00a0caring for the many Americans that call the CNMI home, these 8,000 miles from Washington,\u00a0DC. As we continue to assess the damages and rebuild, I look forward to working with your team and providing you with further updates on our situation,\u201d Torres wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Damage assessments on all three islands are nearing completion with the governor\u2019s formal request for a major disaster declaration expected to be sent to the White House this week.
