{"id":285034,"date":"2018-09-21T06:00:31","date_gmt":"2018-09-20T20:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=285034"},"modified":"2018-09-21T06:00:31","modified_gmt":"2018-09-20T20:00:31","slug":"atalig-focuses-on-rota-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/atalig-focuses-on-rota-recovery\/","title":{"rendered":"Atalig focuses on Rota recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rota Mayor Efraim Atalig is focused on Rota\u2019s ongoing recovery following Typhoon Mangkhut despite his ongoing case in federal court. <\/p>\n<p>Atalig, who was indicted for wire fraud last Sept. 2, 2018, has had his hands full with his ongoing federal case and his role as mayor following the onslaught of Typhoon Mangkhut. <\/p>\n<p>According to Atalig, he has managed to remain strong and is more focused on his role as a leader following the typhoon. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am holding up strong for my people\u2026I put my people and their safety first\u2026. I want to put my constituents\u2019 needs first,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>Atalig said the case doesn\u2019t worry him as much as the restoration of Rota because he claims he did nothing wrong. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am OK with all that\u2019s on my plate because I didn\u2019t do anything wrong,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>The island of Rota has undergone a speedy recovery, with water up 100 percent and power up at 95 percent as of Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>Atalig said he is grateful for all the support that has been given toward the recovery of Rota from all the organizations and agencies that were involved.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we work together, recovery is faster,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>A federal grand jury indicted Atalig on a charge that he allegedly arranged a government-funded trip from Rota to Guam for himself and 12 others, including eight municipal employees, on an allegedly false claim that he was going to check for surplus equipment at the Naval Base in Guam. <\/p>\n<p>According to the allegation, he actually went there to participate in a partisan political rally last June 23 in Mangilao.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment charged Atalig with one count of wire fraud.
