(U.S. NAVY\/JESSE LEON GUERRERO)\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By JESSE LEON GUERRERO<br \/>\n<em>Joint Region Marianas Public Affairs<\/em><\/p>\n<p>DEDEDO, Guam\u2014Sailors from Navy Munitions Command, East Asia Division Unit Guam partnered with the non-profit organization Island Girl Power to help build a community garden in Dededo on Feb. 22.<\/p>\n<p>About a dozen sailors worked alongside other volunteers to clear land, dig holes and prepare soil for gardening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnytime there\u2019s an event to support the community, it\u2019s great,\u201d said Machinist\u2019s Mate 2nd Class (SS) Ken Roberts, who helped coordinate the event. \u201cWe want to build this so it lasts forever, so knowing that I came here and contributed to this is an amazing feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The community garden is part of the organization\u2019s efforts to unite the community and give the public a therapeutic and recreational outlet in an area where they can also grow their own produce for nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>Island Girl Power Director Juanita Blaz said she appreciated the sailors\u2019 involvement and added that their participation was a great opportunity to promote positive role models.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were our go-to group for this project\u2026we need to know that the volunteers we have do have the capability to get the job done,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re efficient and they have safety in mind, and they\u2019re extremely wonderful to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Island Girl Power focuses on preventing sexual assault, substance abuse, suicide, and teen pregnancy among girls age 7-14. The organization\u2019s activities promote a safe and caring environment for girls to connect with one another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re all about empowering young females to be independent and make good decisions,\u201d said Mineman 3rd Class Brooke Bauer. \u201cIt feels good. We\u2019re out here for a good cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NMCEAD Unit Guam has supported numerous volunteer activities around Guam in the past, including cleanups at Talofofo Elementary School and Harry S.
