(JESSE LEON GUERRERO)

YIGO, Guam—Sailors and airmen stationed on Guam spoke to hundreds of students about their military careers during career day at F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School in Yigo on Feb. 26.

The event was an opportunity for service members to educate students about the various jobs in the military.

“Walking in through the spaces and interacting with all the kids, you could feel the energy and excitement,” said Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 Commanding Officer Cmdr. Gregory Leland. “We are grateful to spend some time with the kids here and with the teachers and the administration.”

Leland and several members from the squadron discussed their search-and-rescue operations in Guam and in the region. The sailors also showed students how some of their equipment work by demonstrating procedures with rescue straps and other gear.

Assistant principal Mariann Lujan said the military’s participation shows their great support of the school and career day lets students talk directly to the service members to gain insight into possibilities after graduation.

“We are really happy with the partnership,” she said. “It’s an awesome opportunity for our students now to see the different careers that are available for them that they don’t normally see on this island.”

734th Air Mobility Squadron 2nd Lt. Daniel Dwyer said he remembered the positive influence career day presenters had on him when he was in middle school and wanted to share the same experience with students.

“Part of the reason why we are here today is to exercise one of the core values that the Air Force has: service before self,” he said. “Being [on] an island you’re pretty much locked by water, and I want to make sure they realize all the other opportunities they have. Part of the reason we’re here today is to build that relationship, that community building, with Guam and the military.” (Joint Region Marianas Public Affairs Office)

YIGO, Guam—Sailors and airmen stationed on Guam spoke to hundreds of students about their military…

[4
418,51,163,200
post-28728","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-local-news","tag-air-force","tag-guam","tag-kids","tag-military
["GET
