Ralph DLG Torres signed an executive order to postpone the 2018 CNMI General Election by one week until Nov. 13, 2018 due to Super Typhoon Yutu. Early voting will now start on Nov. 6, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Under Commonwealth law, the governor is authorized to postpone the election for such time as is deemed necessary, but in no event shall postponement exceed 30 days from the date when such election should have been held.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter consultation with the Commonwealth Election Commission, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp., and other relevant agencies, I have determined that it will be nearly impossible to hold the election as scheduled for a variety of significant factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the inability of the CEC to conduct the election as required<\/li>\n<li>the damage to the public and private infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>the people\u2019s need to look after their families and property<\/li>\n<li>the government\u2019s need to concentrate on providing relief to the public\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are at a very sensitive time here in the CNMI, and I want all of our residents on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota to focus on taking care of themselves after experiencing two devastating natural disasters. This recovery operation is beyond politics, and as your governor, we will continue to work closely with [the Federal Emergency Management Agency], [U.S. Department of Defense], and our other federal and military partners during this important time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExercising your right to vote is an important part of our democracy and our freedom.
