{"id":288507,"date":"2018-11-13T06:06:41","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T20:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=288507"},"modified":"2018-11-13T06:06:41","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T20:06:41","slug":"a-legacy-of-heroism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/a-legacy-of-heroism\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018A legacy of heroism\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The CNMI celebrated yesterday the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I at the American Memorial Park, with several members of the U.S. military who are providing relief efforts here, attending.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, who gave the welcoming remarks at the ceremony, expressed gratitude toward those who served, and those who continue to serve, especially those on-island in response to Super Typhoon Yutu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026The typhoon has given us more things to appreciate in life. Seeing the men and women here helping us\u2026is just another testament to what America is all about,\u201d said Torres.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that there are over 1,100 men and women in the military helping the CNMI recover from Yutu.<\/p>\n<p>Rear Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, commander of the Joint Region Marianas, served as the keynote speaker.<\/p>\n<p>She noted that while only a few were fortunate enough to return home from armed conflict and others paid the \u201cultimate sacrifice,\u201d it left behind a \u201clegacy of their heroism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remember those we have lost, those who have served valiantly, and those who continue the fight,\u201d she said. \u201c\u2026Let us give them thanks for the lives we lead and for the lives of our future generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chatfield noted that one in the U.S. military swears an oath to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution. \u201c\u2026Not the flag. Not a person or government office. The Constitution,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cTo the veterans here today, I express my gratitude for your honor, courage, and commitment to serve.
