{"id":289264,"date":"2018-11-27T06:00:29","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T20:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=289264"},"modified":"2018-11-27T06:00:29","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T20:00:29","slug":"nmi-businesses-working-with-dol-during-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/nmi-businesses-working-with-dol-during-recovery\/","title":{"rendered":"NMI businesses\u00a0working with DOL during recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Labor Secretary Vicky Benavente recently appeared\u00a0before the Saipan Chamber of Commerce\u00a0general membership\u00a0and announced that\u00a0the CNMI Department of Labor has already been receiving notices from\u00a0local\u00a0businesses severely impacted by Super Typhoon Yutu.<\/p>\n<p>In her report, several\u00a0businesses\u00a0adversely affected\u00a0by\u00a0Super\u00a0Typhoon Yutu\u00a0are unable to meet payroll, which has prompted CNMI DOL to take significant\u00a0measures to mitigate\u00a0both infrastructural and economic losses.<\/p>\n<p>E-Land (Kensington, Pacific Islands Club, Coral Ocean Point), POI Aviation, Laolao Bay Golf &amp; Resort, and Imperial Pacific International (CNMI) LLC have notified CNMI DOL that they will lay off employees and reduce working hours.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cSeveral IPI employees recently staged a protest in front of the IPI facility in Garapan. Before the protest on Friday, about two dozen IPI employees visited the DOL office, and we are dealing with the situation thoroughly,\u201d said Benavente. \u201cThe DOL Enforcement Division is investigating the IPI employee protest and will provide an update shortly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CNMI DOL\u00a0surveyed more than 60 businesses with approximately 1,300 employees that are affected by the massive infrastructure damage on Saipan and Tinian, the closure of the Francisco C. Ada\/Saipan International Airport, and the cancellation of visitor arrivals from key travel markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundreds of residents are having to cope with the loss of their homes and personal belongings, on top of having\u00a0their work hours reduced.\u00a0CNMI DOL has taken proactive measures to ensure that employees\u2019 concerns will be addressed through a variety of programs that we requested and applied for from the U.S. Department of Labor,\u201d said Benavente.<\/p>\n<p>These programs include the Disaster Unemployment Assistance, which has already seen 2,000 applications distributed and\/or submitted to CNMI DOL. <\/p>\n<p>USDOL and DUA staff will likely be on Saipan around the first week of December to assist in the administration of the program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Majority of DUA applicants work in the following businesses: tour operators, casino, hotels, real estate, catering, poker arcade, and gas station.
