{"id":290379,"date":"2018-12-14T06:00:39","date_gmt":"2018-12-13T20:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=290379"},"modified":"2018-12-14T06:00:39","modified_gmt":"2018-12-13T20:00:39","slug":"epa-awards-the-cnmi-12-2-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/epa-awards-the-cnmi-12-2-million\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA awards the CNMI $12.2 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $2.1 million to the CNMI\u2019s Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality to strengthen its capacity to protect human health and the environment. <\/p>\n<p>EPA has also awarded $10.1 million to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. for wastewater and drinking water infrastructure improvements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CNMI government has been a great partner in environmental protection,\u201d\u00a0said EPA Pacific Southwest regional administrator Mike Stoker.\u00a0\u201cWe are pleased to support both BECQ and CUC programs that are committed to achieving a better environment for all the residents of CNMI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BECQ uses EPA funding to support inspections, emergency responses, radon assessments, coral reef protection, monitoring of beaches and water quality, drinking water improvements, cleanups of contaminated lands and polluted streams, and support for safe use of pesticides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [BECQ] through its Division of Environmental Quality has developed a strong partnership with the U.S. EPA in the development and implementation of environmental programs that aims to protect public health and the environment of the CNMI,\u201d\u00a0said BECQ administrator Eli Cabrera.\u00a0\u201cThe continued funding support and technical assistance from the EPA has been pivotal in the enhancement of DEQ\u2019s environmental programs and the capacity building trainings that have broaden the capability DEQ\u2019s personnel in all areas of environmental protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EPA\u2019s award of Clean Water and Safe Drinking Water Infrastructure Funds to CUC will support projects to increase 24-hour drinking water service to customers, enhance drinking water quality, prevent water pollution, and replace water supply lines. The funds also support improvements to island-wide sewer pump stations, wastewater treatment plants, and sewer system lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commonwealth Utilities Corp. and the CNMI in general are very grateful for the continued support by the EPA in providing needed funding and technical expertise to assist CUC in developing the necessary water and wastewater infrastructure required for our growing communities,\u201d\u00a0said CUC executive director Gary Camacho.<\/p>\n<p>The EPA\u2019s Pacific Southwest Region (Region 9) administers and enforces federal environmental laws in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, the Pacific Islands, and 148 tribal nations\u2014home to more than 50 million people.
