International Christian relief agency Samaritan\u2019s Purse unloads relief goods from their DC-8 cargo aircraft at the Francisco C. Ada\/Saipan International Airport in November. BOONE, N.C.\u2014A\u00a0Compassionate Action Award\u00a0is on its way from PETA to Samaritan\u2019s Purse, the North Carolina-based evangelical charity led by Franklin Graham, in honor of the group\u2019s assistance in transferring a lion and a tiger from the Pacific island of Saipan to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado.<\/p>\n

Samaritan\u2019s Purse airlifted more than 80 tons of relief supplies to Saipan in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Yutu. On the organization\u2019s third relief flight, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. officials reportedly asked for the organization\u2019s help in removing the big cats from a badly damaged roadside zoo.\u00a0Video footage from Samaritan\u2019s Purse\u00a0shows Lambert, a male African lion, and Tasha, a Siberian tiger, traveling on the organization\u2019s DC-8 aircraft to the Colorado sanctuary, where they\u2019ll spend the rest of their lives in comfort.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike the good Samaritan the organization is named for, the kind people at Samaritan\u2019s Purse lent a helping hand, flying these big cats to the U.S. and helping to give them a new lease on life in Colorado\u2019s beautiful Wild Animal Sanctuary,\u201d said PETA vice president Colleen O\u2019Brien. \u201cPETA hopes this story will remind everyone that when animals are in trouble, it\u2019s up to each of us to be a good Samaritan.\u201d<\/p>\n

The big cats\u2019 rescue was also made possible by Tigers in America, an organization that coordinated the rescue and purchased desperately needed food and veterinary care for the animals, and by The Wild Animal Sanctuary, which rushed equipment and personnel to Saipan to manage the animals\u2019 transport and will now provide them with lifelong care.<\/p>\n

Samaritan\u2019s Purse will receive a\u00a0framed certificate\u00a0from PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that \u201canimals are not ours to use for entertainment or abuse in any other way.<\/p>\n
