{"id":293637,"date":"2019-02-12T06:06:46","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T20:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=293637"},"modified":"2019-02-12T06:06:46","modified_gmt":"2019-02-11T20:06:46","slug":"lola-guerrero-wins-scs-geography-bee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/lola-guerrero-wins-scs-geography-bee\/","title":{"rendered":"Lola Guerrero wins SCS Geography Bee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lola Guerrero, a 5th grade student at Saipan Community School, won the school competition of the National Geographic Bee on Jan. 25 and a chance at a college scholarship. <\/p>\n<p>The school Bee, at which students answered questions on geography, was the first round in the 31st annual National Geographic Bee, a geography competition designed to inspire and reward students\u2019 curiosity about the world. In the\u00a0SCS school competition of the National Geographic Bee\u00a0were 10 students competing who won their classroom Geography Bee Rounds including:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> 4th Graders: Jennifer Kim and Enzo Choi<br \/>\n 5th Graders:\u00a0Lola Guerrero\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0Soarin Oh<br \/>\n 6th Graders:\u00a0\u00a0Sophia Brasuell\u00a0and\u00a0Dwight Crisostomo<br \/>\n 7th Graders:\u00a0\u00a0Olivia Hwang\u00a0and Martin Park<br \/>\n 8th Graders:\u00a0Jesse Sablan\u00a0and\u00a0SeoYoung Baek<\/p>\n<p>Students in grades four through eight from nearly 10,000 schools across the United States will compete in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee for a chance to win college scholarships and the glory of being the National Geographic GeoBee champion. The school champions, including Lola Guerrero, take a qualifying test; up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state\/regional Bee on March 29, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>School champions receive a medal and a certificate. Students who advance to the state level compete for cash awards and other prizes. <\/p>\n<p>National Geographic increased the prize money for all State GeoBees in 2019. <\/p>\n<p>State champions will receive a medal, $1,000 in cash, and other prizes, as well as a trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Championship. <\/p>\n<p>The second- and third-place students at State GeoBees will also receive cash awards of $300 and $100, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Each state champion will advance to the national championship and compete for cash awards and college scholarships. <\/p>\n<p>In 2019, the national champion will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, $1,000 in cash, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, and a trip to the Gal\u00e1pagos Islands; second place will receive at $10,000 college scholarship and $1,000 in cash; third place will receive a $5,000 college scholarship and $1,000 in cash; and seven runners-up will receive $1,000 in cash each.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone can test their geography knowledge with the exciting Geo Bee Quiz, an online geography quiz at\u00a0www.nationalgeographic.org\/bee\/study\/quiz, which poses 10 new questions a day and with the National Geographic Geo Quiz Alexa skill, which releases six new questions a day.
