TUMON, Guam<\/strong>\u2014The Sorensen Media Group announced yesterday the passing of company president and founder, Rex Sorensen, who died last Sunday at 73 years old.<\/p>\n

In tribute, a moment of silence was observed across all SMG radio and television stations at 5:30pm yesterday.<\/p>\n

Sorensen came to Guam after a real estate career in Hawaii. In 1981, he launched what would become Guam\u2019s first dedicated talk radio station: Newstalk K-57.<\/p>\n

Along with Jon Anderson, another pioneer in local broadcasting, the Sorensen Media Group grew over the years with expansions into news, FM radio and television products both here and in the CNMI.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to calculate the impact this man has had on the island. Countless organizations and people have been helped through the platforms Rex created and supported. His tenacity was legendary; Guam truly has lost a titan of industry,\u201d said SMG general manager Shin Taira. \u201cWe are also grieving for Rex\u2019s children and his wife Mimi, who welcomed all of our employees into their family. On their behalf, we thank everyone for their prayers and loving thoughts extended during this heartbreaking time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s history with community service organizations like Guam Cancer Care, Habitat for Humanity, the local chapter of the American Red Cross, and others are a result of the example Sorensen set.<\/p>\n

In addition to helping the island through local Rotary clubs, Sorensen also donated years of airtime for veterans to ensure their concerns are heard by the public and elected officials.<\/p>\n

In this spirit, the Sorensen family is asking well-wishers to make a donation to a local non-profit organization in lieu of flowers.\u00a0Sorensen\u2019s wife and children also thank everyone who has offered condolences and shared tributes.<\/p>\n

\u201cEarly in my career, Rex made it a point to tell me why it was important for us to use our soapbox to help others.\u00a0 Every time I host a charity race, or welcome a service organization into the studio, I think about that,\u201d said Kyle Mandapat, SMG vice president of Radio Operations. \u00a0\u201cMany times over, this company has been a springboard to elected office, executive positions in the private sector, and even entrepreneurship.
